Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) is engaged in energy. More specifically, it is involved in the exploration for, and production of, crude oil and natural gas, as well as the manufacture of petroleum products. The company has also expanded to also transport and sell crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products. Although ExxonMobil has many divisions and affiliated companies that deal with a broad range of products and services, including aviation fuels and lubricants, marine fuels and lubricants, petrochemicals and synthetic rubber, and licensing and refining technology, most of its revenue comes from the oil and gas divisions. Because of the relatively soon depletion of fossil fuels in the world, the company has also picked up interests in electric power generation facilities.

As far as fuels are concerned, ExxonMobil sells fuel to consumers through franchises; willing dealers can set up a gas station under the company’s name and with the company’s products in return for giving ExxonMobil a percentage of their revenues. Among the services offered by ExxonMobil to consumers are the ExxonMobil credit card, the ExxonMobil debit card, and the innovative Speedpass, which many consumers feel is an underrated service. ExxonMobil also offers a wide range of fuel products to many commercial customers, including petroleum resellers and industrial customers. The company also offers heating oil and kerosene, as well as fuels for the aviation and marine industries. Because of the nature of chemicals, ExxonMobil has a vast amount of customers in the manufacturing category. The chemicals ExxonMobil deals with are used in a rainbow of products, such as chewing gum, medical supplies, packaging, inks, dry cleaning, and adhesives. To add to this, ExxonMobil's divisions and affiliated companies operate or market products in approximately 200 countries and territories, other than the United States, expanding their range of customers through the global market.

The main competitors of ExxonMobil are in the oil and gas division of the energy sector. BP, a London-based corporation, is the leading competitor in the field. Other main competitors are the French company TotalFinaElf, the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, which includes Shell, and the American ChevronTexaco Corporation. For 2001, 2000, and 1999, ExxonMobil’s gross sales revenues were, respectively, $213.5 billion, $232.7 billion, and $185.5 billion, ranking the company first among its competitors based on that figure. It’s closest competitor, BP, reported a gross sale revenue of $174 billion for 2001. In my opinion, the large difference exists on account of technological differences between the companies. ExxonMobil is the only one of the leading companies in the oil and gas field to have a subsidiary dedicated to licensing and researching new technology.
