What exactly is marketing and how is it related to sales? Well marketing is the flow of goods and services from producer to consumer. Marketing is also the way in which an organization determines its best opportunities in the marketplace, given its objectives and resources. In order for a business or company to be successful in sales they have to know how to market their product. Marketing includes several roles which include product development, packaging, pricing, distribution, customer service and of course promotion. Advertising and sales are included in promotion. Sales are the exchange of goods or services for an amount of money or its equivalent. All of the above mentioned roles are vital to the sales field and without those roles marketing and sales would be total chaos. Information technology has helped the sales field dramatically. Due to advances in hardware and software packages, the use of the Internet, and the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Information technology is being used more and more everyday by businesses and companies. It has become very clear that in order to succeed, a business must take the necessary steps to make themselves number one in the world of business.

In brief, information technology is the collection of tools that make it easier to use, create, manage, and exchange information. Hardware and software packages are being created all the time to update the old and bring in the new. A few of these software packages that are helping enhance the sales field are: Track Web Sales which is a fully based sales force automation solution that is available online, Cpi Sales which is the leading web based trade management solution, Tech Excel Front Office which is an integrated suite of five products providing high end CRM (Customer Relationship Management) solutions, BaanSales which increases the effectiveness and productivity of all sales channels, and the last of thousands upon thousands of software programs that are on the market today is OutSmart which is also a CRM solution which helps in safer organization for businesses. It is quite obvious that the Internet has become a tool that is used all the time. There are also a lot of web sites that allow businesses to promote their products. A few examples of those are Add me, a leading resource for website and e-business promotion on the Internet that is free. Other websites similar to Add me include Submit it, which makes it easier for a business to add its URL’s to a variety of WWW catalogs so people from around the world will be able to find a company’s page and buy their products. This website however has a monthly fee, but it can be very useful to a business. Those are just two examples of the Internet being used in the sales field. A business can easily advertise and promote their product on the Internet and make it more readily available for consumers all over the world. Another type of information technology that is becoming available is the use of electronic directories. These directories are being used more and more to not just keep track of employees and outside partners, but also of the company’s hardware and software. To give an example, it helps information technology managers with the chore of configuring computers on corporate networks.



Five years ago many of the above listed hardware and software programs were unavailable. Even if they were available those hardware and software packages were not as useful as they are today. The advances in computers and the Internet have greatly widened sales and marketing. Computers now operate at the split of a second and people are becoming trustworthier of the Internet. People now for the most part trust buying products online and their trust will continue to grow as businesses make it easier for their consumers to obtain the needed product. Before products were available online the consumer would have to go out to a store or travel farther to find a particular product. Now with the just the click of a mouse that same product can be delivered straight to their door without even having to step out of the house. With advances in technology and the Internet it is becoming more and more clear that the sky is the limit in the sales field. With the advances of the Internet the sales field has become extremely competitive. Businesses are doing everything they can to jump ahead of their main competitors. Always looking for the newest advances and upgrades on previous software packages.

The future role of information technology in sales has no limit. Advances to hardware and software packages are being made available all the time. Businesses and companies are always looking for the next best product upgrade. Every little upgrade could be just what a business needs to stay one step ahead of the competition. Businesses must continue to do everything they can to get ahead of the competition. It is quite obvious that things will only get better for information technology and the field of sales. The Internet is becoming better and better everyday. The Internet is definitely the future of information technology. The speed of computers and the Internet is as fast as the blink of an eye. In the next five years it would not be a surprise to see people using the Internet to buy a lot of the products that were once bought in a store. For the business’s that are not online, they are only hurting themselves. The Internet is clearly the future of sales and everything else for that matter. The electronic data interchange is also expanding as suppliers, producers, distributors, and customers look for improvements. On going advances in information technology along with increasing global competition is only making the field of sales more complex and more competitive. As said before information technology companies are using the expertise and knowledge to make software and hardware programs more attainable and easier to use. These advances will definitely help the sales field reach their potential in the business world.

As a marketing major I am doing my best to keep myself up to date as to the advances that are being made in the technology world today. In order for myself to be successful in the marketing and sales field I need to keep myself aware of the current state of information technology. The sales field is only going to grow and will always be in need of new employee’s that know vital information that could be extremely critical to the success of a business. Information technology is no longer a business resource; it is the business environment. In order for business’s to be successful they must keep up to date with information technology and what people want in the world today. As said before the sky is the limit when it comes to advances and the future role of information technology. If a business can think it then they can achieve it as well.
